What motorisation actually is.
The motor lives inside the roller tube. It is a slim tube motor, roughly the diameter of a 20 cent coin in the smaller sizes, and it drives the blind up and down while a small radio receiver listens for a remote, a wall switch or a hub. Nothing about the blind changes visually. There is no visible box, no track and no external motor, and from the room the only difference from a manual blind is that there is no chain hanging down the side.
What you are really buying is not the motor, it is the commissioning. A motor out of the box has no idea where the top and bottom of your window are, what channel it should answer to, or what group it belongs in. Setting the upper and lower limits precisely, so a row of four blinds in a living room all stop dead level with each other and with the sill, is the work. It is also the part that is skipped most often, and it is why so many motorised installations look approximate.
Motor and power options.
- Lithium battery tube motors: The default for retrofits. Nothing to wire, nothing to cut into a finished wall. Six to twelve months per charge on typical use, charged from a USB lead in a couple of hours. Add a small solar panel on a sunny window and you may never charge it at all. Around $150 to $250 added per blind.
- Hardwired 240V or low-voltage motors: The right call in a new build or a renovation while the frame is open, because a licensed electrician runs power to each head box before the plaster. No charging, ever, and generally more torque for large or heavy blinds. Around $220 to $350 added per blind, plus the electrical work.
- Hub or bridge: One per house, not one per blind. It is what turns a remote-controlled blind into a scheduled, app-controlled and voice-controlled one, and it is what lets a sun sensor or a timer act on its own. Typically $150 to $350 for the house.
- Sun and timer automation: Blinds that drop at 3pm on the west elevation through summer, lift at sunrise, or respond to a light sensor when the sun actually comes around rather than when a clock says it should.
Where it earns its money in a local home.
The clearest case in the Pakenham, Officer and Clyde North estates is the tall raked glass above a living-area slider, and the high window over a stairwell void. Those are the openings nobody operates, because operating them means a ladder. They stay open all summer and cook the room, or stay shut all year and the room never gets light. A motor is the only thing that makes them part of the house.
The second case is a west-facing family room. Pakenham summers run past 35 degrees and the heat arrives with the westerly afternoon sun, usually while nobody is home to do anything about it. A scheduled drop at 3pm on a sunscreen blind means you walk into a room that is several degrees cooler without having run the air conditioning against an open window all afternoon. The third case is any room where a wall of blinds should move as one, which is where grouping and accurate limits matter more than the motor brand.
Child safety.
A motorised blind has no cord, no chain and no loop. That takes it outside the mandatory ACCC corded internal blind standard altogether, and removes the hazard rather than managing it with cord guides and tension devices. In nurseries, children's bedrooms and playrooms this is the strongest single argument for motorisation, and it is why we raise it at the measure in every family home rather than treating it as an upsell.
Price and lead time.
Motorisation adds $150 to $350 per blind including GST, with battery at the lower end and hardwired at the upper. A full-home package with hub, app, scheduling and commissioning runs $4,500 to $12,000. Lead time follows the blind, so 2 to 3 weeks for motorised roller and roman blinds, and longer for large outdoor zip-track drops. Care, batteries and warranty.
Battery motors need charging once or twice a year, and the app or remote will usually tell you before it becomes urgent. Keep the charging lead somewhere you will find it. The mechanical care is the same as any blind: keep the tube and brackets clean and do not force a blind that is fighting something, because a motor will happily keep pulling against an obstruction until something gives.
On warranty, motors and batteries are almost always covered on different terms from the blind itself, and the battery is typically the shorter of the two. Hubs and app services are covered by the manufacturer, not by us, and that is worth understanding because it means the app can change without anyone asking you. We name the motor system and its warranty terms on the quote so you know exactly whose product is in your ceiling. We do not fit motor systems we cannot get parts for in three years.
